Q2 Digital Health Mergers

The digital health market saw a lot of structural shake ups in Q2 of 2018, thanks to numerous mergers and acquisitions. These partnerships were formed to lower administrative costs and to increase market shares, but given the reach some of these companies have, we could see other unexpected effects.

Here are some of the top digital health mergers that took place and thus defined the quarter:

Amazon and PillPack

Amazon acquired PillPack for under a billion dollars. They did not disclose the terms of the deal, but the acquisition allows the shopping solutions provider to expand its service to include pharmaceuticals.

Teladoc and Advance Medical

Teladoc procured Advance Medical after the acquisition of the best doctors. They spent $352 million to acquire the medical company, and this move will help Teladoc expand globally into the Asia Pacific and Latin America. It will also enable the organization to offer care services in twenty languages in its platform.

Medidata and Shyft Analytics
Medidata offers data analytics and cloud storage services for medical trials. Shyft Analytics is the creator of a cloud data analytics channel designed for the biotech and pharma industries. Medidata paid $195 million for the transaction. The two companies have now formed the Intelligent Platform for Life Sciences since the acquisition.

Allscripts and HealthGrid
EHR supplier Allscripts entered into a contract to procure HealthGrid, the maker of the patient communication application, for $60 million. The modest usage of patient portals in the industry and embracing value-based care has made it possible to implement a new strategy to enhance patient engagement.

SCI Solution and DatStat
SCI Solution, the care coordination and patient engagement firm, announced that it had procured DatStat. DatStat specializes in patient engagement and digital health tools. They did not disclose the amount SCI paid for the transaction.

SleepScore Labs and Sleep.ai
SleepScore Labs offers contactless sleep tracker services. It has acquired the Dutch entity for an undisclosed amount. Sleep.ai deals with apps and wearable that help users know whether they snore. The move enables both organizations to expand their sleeping products.

Livongo and Retrofit
Livongo, the digital chronic disease management entity, acquired Retrofit this year. Retrofit specializes in disease prevention and weight-management programs for an unrevealed sum. Livongo customers will now have access to the Retrofit programs. In turn, the procurement will help the Mountain View-based organization expand its own services.
